Pheasant Tail Nymph (based on the original pattern)

Kamasan B170 size 14 hook. Semperfli Classic waxed thread 12/0 brown. A few fibres of a cock pheasant tail are used for the tail and body. Fine dark copper wire taken from an old electric motor is used to add weight to the nymph by building up a ‘ball’ on the hook in the thorax area, as well as ribbing the body. The pheasant tail fibres are tied in to form the tail then wrapped the length of the hook to the eye, tied down, doubled back to before the thorax area to form a wing case. The wire is double wrapped around the fibres to bind the wing case then brought forward to complete the binding of the wing case at the eye. A head is formed. [ Note – both Frank Sawyer ( the nymph creator) and Oliver Kite, initially a neighbour and friend, who publicised the ‘Sawyer Nymph’ with his books , articles and Southern TV programme in the 1960s, only used fine dark copper wire to tie the fly – no thread.]
