Partridge & Orange (Weighted Nymph)

Kamasan B830 size 12 hook. Danville’s Flymaster 6/0 black thread. Few white hen cape hackle fibres for tail. Body weighted with lead wire then wrapped with UNI-Floss burnt orange and ribbed with copper wire. Thorax of wrapped GLO-Brite floss fire orange. Partridge neck hackle. Comment – this version of a traditional North Country spider pattern was devised in the 1970s when numerous commercial fisheries opened in the UK. At the same time some fishery owners improved the breeding of rainbow trout to double weight fish. These large fish could be spotted and targeted using heavy weight nymphs to combat the clear water depths. I remember one day when I and two friends did a 350 mile round trip to Avington Fishery in Hampshire. It was eye opening – you could see all these very large fish swimming about. Sadly none of us had a bite! Even so it was a great experience.
