About

This website is a record of some of the flies I have tied in the last few years. However I have tied ‘on & off’ since the 1960s, although there have been several breaks in between. You will note that there are no dry flies. I am very much a wet fly, nymph or lure angler. I have fished the rivers and lakes of North Wales and the North of England , as well as some of the reservoirs and commercial fisheries too.

I have also dabbled in ‘Fixed Line Fly Fishing’ (Tenkara Style).  It is a very simplistic form of fly fishing but most enjoyable. I can certainly recommend it. I still have a Tenkara rod which has a 14” transport length yet extends to 10’6” to which I attach a length of fluorocarbon line, or a furled leader plus a fly – that’s it.  The ‘Kebari’ category on the site shows the type of flies I use. I favour those with a reversed hackle which can be ‘worked’ in the water – note their similarity to the  ‘Spiders’.  These flies can also be fished on the traditional Western type of fly rod and ‘worked’ in a manner attractive to fish. Try it sometime, you may be surprised how effective it can be.

In the last few years I have not been able to fish as much, owing to ill health and I no longer drive  a car. However I still enjoy fly tying and tend to tie a few flies most days. It is a fascinating hobby and one that is popular world wide. I  belong to Instagram ( dsriley1) and share photos of my creations with  fly dressers from all over the World. Many of whom have become friends.

I have indexed the flies by placing them in different categories to make it easier for you to find those of particular interest to you. Some are in more than one category, as many patterns have more than one use.

This is a new site and still evolving. I hope you enjoy it.

Thank you for your interest.
